High Court Complex

High Court Complex is one of the tourist destinations of Chennai. It is a beautiful Indo-Saracenic building. The second lighthouse tower of Chennai is situated near the High Court Complex. Earlier, the third lighthouse of the city was located on the highest point of the Court.

The High Court Complex of Madras is situated at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road. The Complex lies to the north of St. George Fort. The High Court, City Civil Court and Small Causes Court are located in this complex. High Court Complex was built in 1892. The High Court building is a major tourist attraction as it is the world's second largest judicial complex.

The famous architect Henry Irwin was in charge of building the High Court. It is a red sand stone building with ornamentally decorated walls. Tourists marvel at the beautifully crafted stained glass windows of this building. The High Court also has minarets which give it an old world charm.

The tomb of Elihu Yale's son ,who died at a very young age, is located in the High Court Complex. This tomb was built in the shape of a pyramid and is a memorial to Yale's only son. Court No 13 is a fine piece of architecture. It has fretted wood work and stained glass. It also has silvered panels and a hand painted ceiling. The furniture in this building is finely carved.

The High Court Complex can be toured from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The fee for a guided tour is Rs.10. The Complex is an important landmark of Chennai. It is situated near the beach. Some of the most important business centers of Chennai are located near the Complex.

The Madras High Court is one of the three High Courts of India. The other two are the High Courts of Calcutta and Bombay. It was set up on the 26th of June, 1862. The Madras high Court is in charge of the cases of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

The building of Madras High Court was damaged at the beginning of the second World War. The city of Madras was shelled by S.M.S. Emden on the 22nd of September, 1914. This damaged the High Court building.
