The construction of the fort was completed on April 23rd along with the St. George's Day, celebrated in honor of St. George. The strong fort stands with 6 meter high walls. From 1746 to 1749 it remained in the possession of the French authority but was restored to the British under the treaty of Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which brought an end to the War of Austrian Succession.

At present the fort is serving as the administrative headquarter of the legislative assembly of the state of Tamil Nadu. Upstairs the hall was the Public Exchange Hall that served the purpose of lottery drawings, public meetings, and is occasionally used for entertainment purposes also. The objects kept on display in the museum include weapons, uniforms coins, medals, and other artifacts from Britain, France and India dating back to the British period.
