Birla Planetarium

Birla Planetarium is located in the Kotturpuram suburbs of Chennai city. This is a fully computerized planetarium and is an integral part of the Periyar Science and Technology Center. It is a premier institute in Tamil Nadu, which is a southern State in India. Birla Planetarium is situated on the Gandhi Mandapam Road. The nearest bus stop and railway station are Kotturpuram Bus Stop and the Kotturpuram Railway Station respectively.

Once you visit the Birla Planetarium, you will be able to see the cosmic world revolving around you. You will get to see the twinkling stars, shooting meteoroids, the rotating solar system as well as the undulating contours of the red planet, Mars. This is an ethereal experience which will make you feel one with the sparkling universe. There are eight galleries on various themes in the Birla Planetarium. These themes include Physical Science, Transport, Electronics & Communication, Energy, Materials Science, Life Science, Innovation, International Dolls and Children. You will find over 500 exhibits, which make a visit to the Center an enjoyable and enlightening experience.

You will find a large number of exhibits of the interactive variety the galleries. You can participate directly and learn as well as satisfy your curiosity about various scientific principles. The interaction also provides information on the developments which have taken place in the world of science and technology. You will come to know a lot about the Solar System, Cycle of Stars, Sky and Seasons, Comets as well as Man on the Moon. Birla Planetarium has developed an entirely novel concept in order to carry the message of science to the remotest areas. This program is known as Science on Wheels and it is a mobile science exhibition.

The Birla Planetarium, Chennai also has the modern, sophisticated and versatile GM II projector. Apart from this, there is an accompanying special effects projector which recreates some awe inspiring heavenly phenomena on the specially perforated aluminum inner dome of the planetarium. It is also fully computerized and has a comfortable seating capacity for 236 people. There is a Science Park in the planetarium which will help you to learn a lot of things about Science and Technology. You will also find the impressive Traffic Park which keeps you abreast of the latest road safety measures. This place attracts children as well as adults.

There is an eco-park in the Birla Planetarium. Here you will come to know about the utility of the solar energy, wind energy as well as bio-gas. The eco park also gives information on water, plants, life models of animals, the lion, tiger and deer. This is a definite crowd-puller which attracts a large number of kids.
